What’s The Difference Between A Crossover and SUV?

In general conversation, the average person may not think to differentiate between a crossover and an SUV. However, while SUVs have been a popular option since the 1990s, crossovers have only recently become a go-to alternative for families looking for the perfect vehicle. Since crossovers are larger than your average sedan, but smaller than your typical SUV, they have become a viable option for those looking to save on gas money at the pump – without having to sacrifice space inside.

Better fuel efficiency and larger space are just two of the distinctions between crossovers and SUVs. Here’s a look at some of the other big differences between the two.

The Body Frame

Crossover-Vs-SUVThe most common difference between SUVs and crossovers will be the platform and body frame that they are built on. As you get into larger vehicles, bigger frames need to be made in order to handle the additional size. So while SUVs typically use a “body on frame” design, crossovers commonly use a new architecture known as a “unibody” frame.

When looking at a line of vehicles, you can see how each vehicle is built with a larger frame. Ford, for example, offers the Escape, the Edge, the Explorer, and the Expedition. While the Escape and Edge both have crossover bodies, the Explorer and Expedition both have large SUV frames.

The frame on which the car is built is often considered to be the biggest difference between SUVs and crossover vehicles.

The Overall Appearance

While the biggest difference is often the frame, the most noticeable is very likely the outside appearance. The Ford Expedition is one of the largest SUVs on the market, and it commands respect wherever it goes on the road. Alternatively, the Ford Escape is noticeably more compact, which makes it a more speedy option than bigger models on the line.

A favorite amongst many consumers is the new Ford Explorer. After re-imagining and recreating the entire look, the new Explorer is the perfect option for families. Not only is it large and elegant looking, but it also offers a bevy of features on the inside that your entire family will love.

The Cost Of The Vehicle

What may be the most important difference to you between crossovers and SUVs is the bottom line price. Even if you love the way an SUV looks, or the way a crossover handles, it won’t make a difference if you can’t fit it into your budget. Many families love crossovers not only because they have a slightly lower cost, but also because fuel will be less expensive over time as well. SUVs provide plenty of luxury and class, but they also come with a higher price tag to match.

When looking for the perfect car for your family, you may have narrowed down your options to a crossover and an SUV. Now you know the difference between a crossover and SUV, so use this information as you finalize the perfect ride for you and your family.
