Domino’s And Ford Partnership

Getting a pizza delivered is almost an American pastime at this point. There is no better feeling than waiting by the phone and finally receiving that call that dinner is here. Pizza delivery as we know it could be changing for the better and Ford is a big part of the reason why.

What’s The Plan

The plan is for Ford to help create self-driving delivery vehicles. This would mean that when you order a pizza, it arrives in an autonomous car. It might sound like a crazy idea, but it might happen much sooner than you think. Ford has partnered with pizza giant Domino’s to give the new groundbreaking technology a try. As of now, the self-driving delivery vehicles are only operating in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is not clear when they will expand beyond Michigan, but more should be known about the partnership in the coming months.

Why It Will Work

As we have written about before, driverless cars are going to be growing in popularity quickly and Ford is certainly an industry leader in their development. Driverless delivery vehicles are especially intriguing because they could be used for every type of delivery, not just pizza. This means anytime you order delivery food, groceries, or anything else it could arrive without a driver behind the wheel. This will save both companies and consumers money as it will be cheaper to use driverless cars to deliver rather than drivers. Of course, driverless cars will likely be able to deliver pizza faster as there is less risk for wrong turns or human error.

Why Domino’s?

Domino’s was an obvious partner for Ford to pursue to test out their driverless delivery technology. Domino’s is not only one of the biggest pizza chains, they are the biggest pizza chain that prides themselves on delivery. It is what sets them apart, speedy and reliable delivery. Domino’s CEO Patrick Doyle said “As delivery experts, we’ve been watching the development of self-driving vehicles with great interest as we believe transportation is undergoing fundamental, dramatic change.” The company realizes just how useful this technology could be for them and their customers, so they wanted to be on the forefront of the shift to driverless cars.

What’s Next?

It is not entirely clear what is next now that Domino’s and Ford have partnered. They have not announced any plans to expand beyond Ann Arbor, Michigan but it is certainly coming. It has been rumored that Ford hopes to release driverless vehicles in the year 2021, but to this point that has mostly been rumors. Domino’s has given no timeline and has merely stressed how they recognize that driverless delivery is the future. Make sure you pay close attention the next time you order a pizza, because you never know when it will drive itself to you.
